Use with added Glycerol in isolating pseudomonas and in differentiating Pseudomonas aeruginosa from other pseudomonas based on pigment formation:

Peptone provides a source of carbon and nitrogen

Magnesium chloride and potassium sulfate promote production of pyocyanin

Irgasan selectively inhibits contaminant bacteria

Agar is the solidifying agent
